Most leaders I work with are thoughtful, capable, and deeply committed to doing good work with good people.

They are not looking for attention.
They are looking for clarity.

That is exactly why the Working Genius Spotlight exists.

This series highlights real business leaders who have taken the Six Types of Working Genius assessment and then actually applied what they learned. Not as a personality label. Not as a badge. But as a practical way to reduce friction, improve communication, and make work feel lighter and more aligned.

You can view the Working Genius Spotlight articles here.

What is the Working Genius Spotlight?

The Working Genius Spotlight is a short article focused on a business leader like you who has benefitted from taking and applying the Six Types of Working Genius framework.

Each Spotlight showcases your personalized, custom Six Types of Working Genius Assessment that I create for you, so others can clearly see:

Your Working Geniuses
The activities that give you joy, energy, and fulfillment. These are the types of work you are naturally wired to do and where you tend to do your best work.

Your Working Competencies
The work you can do competently and reliably, but that does not energize you for long periods of time.

Your Working Frustrations
The types of work that drain your energy and leave you feeling depleted, even if you are objectively good at them.

This is not about boasting or exposing weaknesses.
It is about naming reality.

And that leads to an important question.

Why Would You Want Others to Know Your Working Genius Results?

After helping dozens of coworkers, leaders, and clients understand and share their Working Genius assessment results, a clear pattern has emerged.

When people understand how you work best, everything and everyone around you tend to work better.

Clarity about how you contribute, how you think, and what drains you reduces misunderstanding and unnecessary friction across teams, relationships, and organizations.

Why It’s Good for Others to See Your Custom Working Genius Assessment

Your supervisor
They gain immediate insight into how to support you, where you add the most value, and how to avoid unintentionally placing you in roles or responsibilities that drain you.

Your team members
They understand how to collaborate with you more effectively, what you bring to the table, and how to interpret your reactions, questions, or silence.

Your future employers
They see more than a résumé. They see how you think, how you contribute, and where you are most likely to thrive.

Your clients and customers
They gain confidence in how you operate, communicate, and make decisions. Transparency builds trust faster than polished positioning ever could.

Your suppliers and vendors
They better understand how to work with you, how decisions get made, and what clarity looks like in your world.

Your family members, especially your spouse
Work does not exist in a vacuum. When the people closest to you understand what energizes you and what drains you, it reduces unnecessary tension and misunderstanding outside of work as well.

The Benefits You Get from Being Featured in the Working Genius Spotlight

Being featured in a Working Genius Spotlight article creates several practical benefits that extend well beyond the article itself.

Trust through transparency
When people understand your strengths and limitations, expectations become clearer and working relationships improve.

An expanded professional profile beyond LinkedIn
People gain a clearer picture of how you contribute, not just where you have worked.

A ready-made Featured article for your LinkedIn profile
One that highlights clarity, contribution, and self-awareness rather than credentials.

A professional online presence that reflects how you actually work
This allows you to be discovered in a way that is accurate, grounded, and useful.

High-quality backlinks for your business or personal website
These are relevant, meaningful, and earned through substance rather than promotion.

The opportunity to explain who you are in your own words
Not through a résumé. Not through a bio. But through how you actually experience work.

A forum for my observations and positive feedback
I share what I see in your Working Genius results and how they show up in real-world leadership and collaboration. Many people find this external perspective surprisingly affirming.

One important note: being featured in the Working Genius Spotlight is a collaborative process. Nothing is published without your review and approval, and you always retain control over what is shared and how it is represented.

My role is to help you express clarity, not to put words in your mouth or position you in a way that feels inauthentic.

This Is Not About Self-Promotion

The Working Genius Spotlight is not about putting yourself on a pedestal.

It is about reducing friction before it turns into frustration.
It is about helping others work with you more effectively.
It is about naming how you are wired so expectations become clearer and collaboration becomes easier.

In short, it is about clarity.

If that resonates with you, the Working Genius Spotlight may be a helpful next step.

If you would like to learn more about being featured, or if you are curious whether this would be useful for your situation, I am always happy to have a low-pressure conversation.

Clarity tends to compound.

Interested in Being Featured in a Working Genius Spotlight?

If you would like to share your Six Types of Working Genius Assessment and story in a Working Genius Spotlight article like this, please let me know using this form.

If you are already working with me through a paid coaching package, the Working Genius Spotlight is included and we can incorporate it naturally into our work.

I also like to help others build their professional communities and networks by sharing their Working Genius Spotlights in my weekly newsletter where I share short, practical insights to help leaders improve their team’s communication, alignment, and clarity without adding more to your plate. If you’re not already getting these emails and would like to, just enter your info here.

Each of the six is required to accomplish any type of endeavor. Every “project” requires all six geniuses.

No one person has all six Working Geniuses.

Each type of genius receives and/or gives something to the adjacent type.
Discernment: assesses the merit and workability of the ideas or solution

Galvanizing: generates enthusiasm and action around the idea or solution

Enablement: initiates support and assists in the implementation of the idea or solution

These feelings were driven by the idea that I should be more of a cheerleader, the kind of leader who is up in front inspiring teams to do work even when they really didn’t want to. I somehow thought I needed to be more disruptive and aggressive to be a “real leader”.

I learned to act this way and rally the troops when I needed to as a leader, but I didn’t enjoy it. Doing these tasks drained the energy right out of me, even if I was successful doing it.

Thankfully, the Working Genius model helped me to understand that not all leaders are created to be Galvanizers. And, I didn’t have to feel guilty about not liking this type of work.

As you can see in my Working Genius Assessment Report, Galvanizing is one of my Working Frustrations. No wonder I didn’t feel fulfillment when being the cheerleader!

This realization allowed me to let others who DID have the Working Genius of Galvanizing do this work without feeling guilty or “less than”.

Similarly, I was able to recognize that my biggest contribution as a leader came in a more responsive approach because my Working Geniuses are Enablement and Discernment. Both of these function in response to input from other team members.

I don’t like to come up with completely new ideas from scratch (Invention), but I love to help others think through their ideas and serve as a sounding board for them (Discernment and Enablement).

While some, including me when I’m doubting myself, may not see this type of work as the skills of a “real leader”, they are.

The Six Types of Working Geniuses framework constantly reminds me of that and helps me be a more confident leader by showing me how I’m created to do work DOES add value to teams and businesses.

I can be an effective, successful leader not in spite of how I’m made, but because of it!

How Has The Working Genius Model Helped You Be a Better Team Member?

The increased self-confidence I described above makes me a better team member as well as a better leader.

Because of the Working Genius model, I now recognize how I can help others be more successful by using my Enablement and Discernment to support them.

I’m also able to communicate clearly with others, including my supervisors and clients, that while I am good at pushing tasks and projects through to completion (Tenacity) and have spent much of my career doing project management type work that requires this, it’s not what brings me the most fulfillment.

Because Tenacity is a Working Competency for me, I can do this type of work for a while and do it well. But, over time I’m going to get burnt out if this is all I’m doing.

So, I’m now more open and transparent to share that insight when I’m building a team so we can ensure that others with the Working Genius of Tenacity are doing the work that will eventually drain me but will energize them because they loved to do it!

I also found this snippet that describes my Working Genius pairing as “The Insightful Collaborator” helpful and encouraging as I do my work as a Business Coach.

“An intuitive, empathetic advisor and team player.
Tenacity: commits to ensuring that the idea or solution gets completed and that desired results are achieved (Working Competency 1)

Wonder: identifies the need for improvement or change (Working Competency 2)

Galvanizing: generates enthusiasm and action around the idea or solution (Working Frustration 1)

Invention: confirms the importance of that need, and generates an idea or solution (Working Frustration 2)

I should be spending the most time at the top of my list and the least time at the bottom.

There are a couple of things about this to remember.

First, my order of types of work is applicable to me, but not necessarily everyone else on my team. They should invest their time according to their list not mine.

Remembering this will help us have the strongest team.

Second, I will still have to do tasks that fall near the bottom of my list. In other words, we all have to do work that doesn’t energize us at times.

But knowing this helps me feel less frustrated and defeated when doing things that require Galvanizing and Invention.

Because I know these are my Working Frustrations, I don’t expect them to energize me.

Rough edges can mean a lot of things depending on the context, but I’m referring to those frustrating, annoying default behaviors in your coworkers.

This guide, based on the Six Types of Working Genius framework, will help you identify and deal with your coworkers’ rough edges by applying what you know about their Working Genius pairing. It will even equip you to support any coworker whether they’ve shared their Working Genius assessment with you or not.

And, if you happen to have any of your own rough edges, this guide will help you too.

Based on my 35+ year career of working with other humans in professional settings, I’m pretty sure your coworkers would say you have some rough edges of your own.

Here’s why I say that.

Everyone Has a Working Genius Pairing and Every Pairing Has Rough Edges

When you learn the Working Genius model, you learn that every person has two types of work that bring them joy, energy, and fulfillment. They have two Working Geniuses. The combination of those two Working Geniuses is called a Working Genius Pairing.

So, you and every person you work with has a Working Genius pairing (whether you’ve taken the Working Genius Assessment and are aware of it or not).

And each of the Working Genius pairings have drawbacks that always go with the positives, as I describe in my article, Working Genius Pairings – The Official List And My Personal Perspective.

These drawbacks or negative aspects can also be called “rough edges”.

These are the things people (yes, you and I are included) naturally do because of how we’re created. But when we do them too much or at the wrong time, we can create frustration for the people we work with. This is especially true when we don’t understand why we or other people behave the way they do.

Ironically, the exact behaviors and tendencies that make us a highly valuable team member can also make us super annoying.

By identifying our own rough edges and the rough edges of our coworkers, we will become more self-aware and more aware of how to help our teammates.

We’ll perform better ourselves and help our team be more productive and effective.

That’s what this guide is designed to do so now let’s see how to use it.

How to Use This Guide

This guide is divided into three sections for each of the fifteen Six Types of Working Genius Pairing. Each section can be used by you to improve your self-awareness and increase your understanding of the people you lead or your coworkers.

You may not have all the Working Genius Pairings represented on your team so focus on the pairings that apply.

However, you’ll be an even better leader and coworker if you familiarize yourself with all 15 Working Genius Pairings and their rough edges.

Based on my experience, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll recognize the behaviors or the coworkers who frustrate you – even without knowing their Working Genius pairing.

With this guide, you can empathize with them more, be frustrated by them less, and know how you can better support them.

Here’s how to use each of the three sections.

“Rough Edges to Watch Out For” Section

The “Rough Edges to Watch Out For” section will help you identify some of the default behaviors and tendencies in yourself and your coworkers related to each Working Genius pairing.

Because these behaviors come naturally, you’ll want to know how to spot them so you can exercise self-control and apply them in the most effective way at the optimal time.

You want to control your default behaviors instead of having your default behaviors control you!

“Consider Doing This” Section

When you know the rough edges behaviors that go along with your Working Genius Pairing, you can apply these tips and tricks to be the best possible team member you can be.

And, if you’re a supervisor, you can have a conversation with your direct reports to help them choose actions they want to take to avoid the negative impact of the rough edges of their Working Genius pairing too.

These ideas are based on my personal experience using the Working Genius Team Maps with my coworkers and clients and the discussions you can listen to in the Tablegroup podcasts listed below.

These suggestions are proven to work with all sorts of teams in countless types of businesses, so I encourage you to try them out to see what works best for you in your business.

“How To Help Them” Section

If you’re a leader, you’ve likely built a diverse team of individuals who aren’t cookie-cutter replicas of yourself.

You’ve got a Working Genius Team Map that allows you see how each member of your team gets the most joy, energy, and fulfillment from the type of work they do as a member of your team.

Your team is highly productive and effective as a result.

But that doesn’t mean those unique individuals don’t frustrate and annoy each other at times. That’s a natural and expected result of having a diverse team.

This section of the guide will help your team members and you respond positively to the rough edges of others. They won’t just tolerate these annoyances, but they’ll be equipped to come alongside one another to help them feel understood and appreciated.

And that positivity will result in a more humble, vulnerable, cohesive team with a deeper level of trust.

The environment you and your coworkers create together using these recommendations will boost your productivity and increase the level of satisfaction and fulfillment for all of you!

Knowing you’re going to get that kind of outcome makes you want to get to it, so let’s go!

This table of contents and the return links in each section allows you to navigate quickly to the Working Genius Pairings that are most important to you.

Table of Contents – The 15 Working Genius Pairings

The Creative Dreamer – Wonder and Invention (WI | IW)

You’re thinking about new ideas and concepts while others are looking for realism and actionability. Your notebook’s full of new ideas but few of them have ever become reality.

You’re willing to go to any brainstorming meeting because it’s fun to you. But the idea of leaving the meeting with action items doesn’t interest you at all.

You can come up with some pretty impractical ideas at often at the completely wrong time.

Consider Doing This

Tell people that you aren’t always realistic or practical in your thinking and that can create chaos and stress. You might be wondering and inventing when the team needs to be finishing out the final details of a project.

Resist the urge to throw out a new idea when the team is nearing the finish line.

When you get a new idea during a meeting that isn’t focused on Ideation, write it down and save it to share with the group at a time when it won’t be disruptive.

How To Help Them

If you’re having an Implementation meeting, tell them something like this before the meeting starts, “In this meeting I invited you to, I’m going to need you to leave your W outside the room. I value your big-picture questions, but we’re past that stage of the project. We need to get into practical decision making at this point.”

Resist the urge to embrace the chaos they create if it’s not the appropriate stage of the project. Chaos can be valuable when a project starts, but in the Activation and Implementation phases, the constant churn from new ideas being suggested is disruptive and not beneficial.

Go back to Table of Contents.

The Contemplative Counselor – Wonder and Discernment (WD | DW)

Rough Edges To Watch Out For

You question yourself regularly and can tend to be too nuanced. Your questions often slow down meetings.

You have a tendency to value certainty over clarity. You might tend to push for more certainty when the level of clarity that’s been achieved is sufficient for the team to make progress.

You’re uncomfortable declaring anything with certainty or landing on a specific answer, even when it’s needed. As you bounce back and forth between Wondering and Discerning, you become less certain and more stressed.

Consider Doing This

Label your question a “W (Wonder) Question” before you ask it. Make others aware that you’re not just getting the team stuck in the weeds or changing the altitude of the meeting. You’re using your Genius intentionally.

Learn to recognize when you’re over analyzing or over thinking. Reflect on past meetings where you felt like you slowed things down more than was productive. Doing this with a trusted colleague can help you stay objective.

If you’re not convinced your idea is a good one, tell the team you’re “renting” not “owning” it.

How To Help Them

Point out when you see them over-nuancing. Encourage them that they don’t have to have the one, specific, exactly-correct answer for their input to be valuable. Ask them to share what they think MIGHT be a good idea.

You sometimes take on work others should be doing. Eventually you end up feeling overworked and unappreciated, and maybe even resentful and bitter if this continues for too long.

Internal stressful feelings of your Discernment telling you someone’s idea might be wrong while your Enablement simultaneously doesn’t want you to be completely forthright with them because they might be offended.

You soften criticism too much and don’t present your point of view as emphatically as you really believe it.

Consider Doing This

Recognize that your E (Enablement) can overwhelm your D (Discernment) so even though you might see the problem, your desire to please the other person might prevent you from pointing it out to them.

Acknowledge that while being quick to please makes you an amazing team member, it can also keep the team from being as good as it can be as a combined unit.

Tell your teammates that you’re not good at “ruffling people’s feathers” and you feel really guilty when you do it.

How To Help Them

Praise them when they step out of their comfort zone by speaking up when it may cause conflict or criticism.

Ask them to give you harder, more direct criticism and position your request as an opportunity for them to express their care for you in a way that will help you even more than being too easy on you or nice.

When they do take the courageous step of telling you a hard truth, be sure to tell them that you appreciated them sharing what they really thought and being vulnerable. Describe the positive outcome they helped you achieve. Your feedback will reinforce how they are using their Enablement by exercising their Discernment.

Go back to Table of Contents.

The Judicious Accomplisher – Discernment and Tenacity (DT | TD)

Rough Edges To Watch Out For

You can be judgmental when others aren’t meeting your standards. And you can be even harder on yourself too.

You have an impatience that you prefer to refer to as a “strong bias for action”. You want things done perfectly and on time. And you don’t like it when you or your coworkers can’t make that happen.

Quickly thinking you know what to do and not allowing adequate time for others to process and think. For instance, in a planning session, you see what needs to be done and you want to stop the meeting and go do it.

Consider Doing This

Realize that not everyone has your ability to know how to get work done and do it all the way to the end.

Admit your tendency to be a little judgy. It is very difficult for someone else to bring this up with you when they already feel they’re being judged. Be realistic about how long it takes other people do things and be gracious.

You have a strong sense of responsibility to finish what you say you will do. So be careful not to let your Tenacity overwhelm your Discernment. Apply your D before your T by remembering the W-I-D-G-E-T work order.

How To Help Them

Try not to be offended or return judgment when they seem to be judgmental with you or others on the team. It’s a natural part of being a DT and “rough edge” you can help them watch out for. Try to empathize and understand.

Offer to talk with them about the angst they tend to feel when working with others who do not share their high standards in driving for closure, or they think they might fail themselves. Help them consider whether these feelings are founded in reality and beneficial for them to hold onto or may be driven by other factors like guilt.

Work with them to clarify expectations before you start working together. This will prevent future frustration.

Go back to Table of Contents.

The Enthusiastic Encourager – Galvanizing and Enablement (GE | EG)

Rough Edges To Watch Out For

You’ve been described as an “over the top cheerleader”. Your instant reaction to almost every idea you’re presented with is, “Yes! Yes! You can do this!” because you’re optimistic and see the good in opportunities.

Your power in being an Enthusiastic Encourager diminishes over time because people get used to you and think maybe you’re acting out of reflex without really thinking about the ideas you’re excited about.

You can sometimes push for ideas you later realize you shouldn’t have promoted quite so energetically.

Consider Doing This

Ask others to slow you down occasionally and warn them that you might just accidentally encourage them to do something unwise if you get too caught up in your own excitement. “I may encourage you right off a cliff!”

Encourage your team to get input from others who may be less enthusiastic about their ideas. Tell them you value diversity in thinking even if the opinions of others are different than yours.

Remind yourself that saying, “That’s a bad idea.” is just as valuable as encouragement when an idea really is bad.

How To Help Them

Realize they might hear one of your suggestions and move immediately to telling you it’s a great idea without taking the time to consider whether it really is. They’re not being insincere. They just want to support you.

Compare their advice with the perspectives of others. If they’re the only ones encouraging you to do something, you might want to pause before you blindly follow their rallying cry.

Help them think through the potential negative impacts to the team and to them personally when they are too quick to affirm others or provide unwarranted praise. Explore how they might be seen as naïve or insincere.

Go back to Table of Contents.

The Assertive Driver – Galvanizing and Tenacity (GT | TG)

Rough Edges To Watch Out For

You can be seen as impatient, pushy, and even a little domineering.
You’ll blow through any obstacle in your way and you’re even comfortable ignoring social protocols from time to time when it’s required to push something through to completion.

Your high convictions and standards are hard or almost impossible for others to live up to. And, for you too, if you’re willing to admit it.

Consider Doing This

Acknowledge and tell others that you might seem too aggressive at times because you’re good at figuring out ways to “kick down doors” to get things done and you don’t have a lot of patience.

Don’t get too cocky from all the praise you get. Businesses always need people like you to make projects successful so you’ve likely been encouraged to keep doing what you’re doing. Consider how your approach could leave “scorched earth” behind you and think about the impact on people.

How To Help Them

Remind them of how valuable they are to the team.
Be ready to get kicked in the butt when they are doing their thing. And realize you might get a kick when you don’t deserve it. Gather your courage and stand up for yourself when that happens.

Recognize that the rough edges of a GT | TG are obvious and easy to see because their Geniuses are so disruptive. That makes them an easy target for criticism when discussing this topic.
You never allow yourself to not finish a task you’ve agreed to do. If you volunteer for something, you’re going to see it through to completion even if that means burning yourself out.

Share with people how susceptible you are to volunteering too much and taking on more tasks than you can realistically complete on your own. They can help you keep your workload at a reasonable level.

Use this phrase to express how much you need help from others, “I have a problem with overcommitting. Would you please help me with this because I can’t seem to help myself say No.”

How To Help Them

When they volunteer to do something, gently ask them, “Are you sure this is the right thing to say Yes to?” or “If you’re saying Yes to this, what are you saying No to?” or “What will adding this do to your stress level?”

Proactively look for ways to show you appreciate them. ET | TEs can be crushed when their efforts are taken for granted and the impact of their work is not acknowledged.

Recognize and avoid the temptation to think there’s nothing wrong with them saying Yes to everything because they get things done.
Ask for the Working Genius Assessment as a gift

Engage with a business coach who is a Working Genius Certified Facilitator

Let me get something right out in the open before you read any further, so you don’t think I’m misleading you.

You can see from this list that by “free” I mean YOU aren’t paying for the 6 Types of Working Genius Assessment.

Because just like the “free” breakfast you get at Embassy Suites, somebody has to pay for it – even when it’s included in the price.

So if we agree we mean YOU don’t have to use your personal money to get a “free” Working Genius Assessment, let’s walk through each option.

We’ll start with the one that seems to be the most obvious to me as a business leader.

In fact, for most successful leaders in a business, this option is a “complete no brainer”.

Real quick before we dig in, if you’re not familiar with the Six Types of Working Genius model, you might want to read this article first: What Is the Working Genius Assessment? – A Real Life Example then come back here to see how you can get yours for free.

1. Have Your Company Pay for The 6 Types of Working Genius Assessment

Why do I consider the decision to purchase a Working Genius Assessment for an employee a “complete no brainer”?

It’s simple.

The cost of a single assessment is small (for a business of any size) and the return on that small investment is big. And it’s immediate!

Small investment plus big (and immediate) return equals a “complete no brainer.”

This falls into the “just go do it” category in my opinion. Some decisions are hard to make. This one isn’t.

But good business leaders don’t make decisions, even the “no brainers”, until they have a clear understanding of how much they’re investing and what they’re getting for their money.

So since you’re a good business leader, let me help you out.

Whether you’re making this decision for your own business or you need to educate your boss, here’s the information you want to consider to justify your decision.

A Simple Business Justification for a Working Genius Assessment

The Cost of the Working Genius Assessment

Let’s start with the financial part of this investment: the cost to buy and take the Working Genius Assessment.

Patrick Lencioni with the team at The Table Group sets the retail price which you can find on the official Working Genius portal.

When you see that price, keep these three things in mind.

1. The retail price for a single Working Genius assessment is the highest price you can pay.

Discounts are available when you buy in bulk or, in some cases, through a Working Genius Certified Facilitator.

2. You most likely spent WAY more than the cost of a single Working Genius assessment on your last business meal.

Even if you’re extremely frugal, you won’t get a lot of food (and definitely not drinks!) at this price.

3. You will also have to invest about 10 minutes to take the assessment.

Yes, you did read that right. The assessment will only take you about 10 minutes. If you spend much more time than that, you’re over thinking it.

While I’m sure you operate at a high level of efficiency, I bet you can carve out 10 minutes from your packed schedule without a significant negative impact to your performance.

So, to summarize, the time investment to complete the Working Genius Assessment is negligible and the financial investment is very small.

The payback, however, is just the opposite.

The Payback of the Working Genius Assessment

Best-selling author and organizational health expert Pat Lencioni captures the payback of an investment in the Working Genius Assessment with this quote.

“The best leaders are the most self-aware leaders.”

Patrick Lencioni

Research done by Korn Ferry supports Lencioni’s position.

What research suggests about self-awareness and high-performing leaders

They analyzed 6,977 self-assessments from professionals at 486 publicly traded companies and tracked their stock performance over 30 months. The findings indicated that companies with a higher rate of return also had leaders who exhibited higher levels of self-awareness. Specifically, employees at poorly performing companies were 79% more likely to have lower overall self-awareness than those at firms with robust return on revenue.

Organizational psychologist and author of Insight, Dr. Tasha Eurich, in summarizing her research reported similar results.

She found that self-awareness is a key predictor of leadership success, and her research suggests that when we see ourselves clearly, we:

Make sounder decisions

Build stronger relationships

Communicate more effectively

Are more confident and more creative

Are more-effective leaders with more-satisfied employees and more-profitable companies

I don’t know about you, but those are the types of leaders I want on my team!

Interestingly, however, Eurich also discovered that only 10-15% of people are truly self-aware, despite 95% believing they are.

That tells me that to be a successful leader of leaders, you need to do everything you possibly can to help them develop true self-awareness.

What you can do to help yourself and your leaders be more self-aware

Based on the results of tens of thousands of Working Genius Assessments, Patrick Lencioni describes the 6 Types of Working Genius Assessment as “the simplest and fastest way to discover your gifts and transform your life.“

In other words, when you invest in your employee (or yourself) and give them a company-funded, i.e. “free” Working Genius Assessment, you’re going to get a big return on your investment and you’re going to get it fast.

Like I said, it’s a “complete no brainer.”

Still don’t feel comfortable asking your boss to pay for your assessment?

How about getting a 6 Types of Working Genius free assessment AND helping out the people who love you at the same time?

Here’s how to do it.

2. Ask for the Working Genius Assessment as a Gift

It’s confession time for me. I am more than a little annoying to my friends and family members in one particular area.

Well, if I’m being completely honest, I’m annoying in a lot of ways, but one is particularly relevant here.

Buying a gift for me (and probably you) is hard

I am TERRIBLE to buy gifts for!

You may be the same way.

If you are, you know exactly how I feel when someone asks me what I want for Christmas. Or for my birthday. Or Father’s Day. Or on whatever occasion someone who loves me wants to honor me with a gift.

What’s my answer?

You know because it’s probably similar to yours.

Something like this:

“I don’t know. I don’t really need anything. I’ve got everything I need. You don’t need to be spending your money on me.”

Or, sometimes I know exactly what I want, but it’s WAY out of their price range.

Because as much as my kids love me, I don’t think they’re quite yet in a position to buy me a brand-new pickup for Father’s Day!

I know. I know. What do I have to complain about? This is clearly a first-world problem.

But is a real problem and you’ve probably been in my uncomfortable situation at some point. If you haven’t yet, you likely will be.

Your loved ones don’t like to hear the same old non-answer year after year any more than you want to give it to them.

So, try something different the next time someone asks what you would like as a gift.

A Six Types of Working Genius Assessment is an incredibly meaningful (and affordable) gift

Tell them you would LOVE to try the Working Genius Assessment and send them to my homepage so I can help them get it to you.

And, if the Individual Working Genius Assessment Review package I offer is more than they want to spend, I’ll help them purchase an assessment on their own.

They’ll get the satisfaction of giving you a gift you really want – one that will provide real, life-changing value for you.

And, you’ll get the 6 Types of Working Genius free assessment you’re looking for.

That’s a whole lot better than getting another Starbucks gift card you’ll forget to use, isn’t it?

There are other occasions that are also perfect to ask for a Working Genius Assessment. For example:

Your Graduation

You can start your career out right by discovering your natural gifts and finding out what type of work you’re designed to do.

Too many people spend years, even decades, in jobs that suck the life out of them.

You don’t have to let this happen to you.

You can ask the people who love you to give you a gift that could be the difference between doing work that brings you energy and fulfillment and dreading every single day of the new job you’re about to start.

Your new boss is going to be impressed when you explain how you can add the most value to the company by doing specific types of work and avoiding others.

You’ll have a level of self-awareness well beyond what most of your new teammates have even though they’re much further along in their careers.

And based on the research I referenced above the impact the Working Genius Assessment can have on your leadership potential could make this graduation gift the most valuable present you’ll ever receive.

Your future self getting those significantly higher paychecks than your fellow graduates will thank you.

To get started, you can simply tell people to sign you up for an Individual Working Genius Assessment Review with me as your graduation gift. Or you can have them buy an assessment at WorkingGenius.com and review it on your own.

Either way, you’re going to get a 6 Types of Working Genius free assessment and big boost to start your career.

They’ll be thrilled to know they gave you a gift that will actually made a long-term positive impact on your career and your life.

Or, if you happen to be coming up on a life event even bigger than your graduation, you can try this technique.

Your Wedding

Put a Working Genius Team Mapping Exercise for 2 on your wedding gift registry!

The Working Genius Model is as, or even more, valuable to a team of two working together at home as it is to teams in the workplace.

The couples I’ve done a mapping exercise for have discovered new things about their partners and themselves almost immediately!

And, to build a strong marriage that is full of joy, energy, and fulfillment, the teammate you want to understand the best is your spouse.

Even if your marriage occurred long, long ago, the Working Genius Assessment can benefit you and your spouse so you have another option to get a 6 Types of Working Genius Free Assessment.

Your Anniversary

What kids wouldn’t want to give their parents a gift that will add new energy, understanding, and depth to their relationship?

The Working Genius Team Mapping Exercise for 2 can do exactly that!

Check out these two Working Genius podcast episodes to get more insight on how the Working Genius principles apply in two-person teams, including marriages.

Working Genius Podcast Episode 72: Partnerships and Dirty Work (click here to listen)

In a marriage, a project team, or any other sort of partnership that consists of only two people, someone is going to be taking on dirty work. In this episode, Pat Lencioni and the Working Genius team discuss the necessity of awareness and gratitude in every partnership.

Working Genius Podcast Episode 18: Person on the Street: Tom and Rosylyn (click here to listen)

You can listen as Patrick Lencioni & Cody Thompson talk with Tom and Rosalind Stenzel, co-owners of the innovative retail store “Venture.” Their real-life conversation shows the benefits that come with increased self-awareness and a deeper understanding of one’s innate talents in a business setting and in a marriage.

Through the assessment they quickly discover Tom has the Working Geniuses of Invention and Tenacity while Rosylyn’s are Tenacity and Wonder.

It’s fascinating to listen to Tom and Rosylyn talk about how these Working Geniuses and their Frustrations in combination with each of their unique Working Genius pairings impact the work they do together in their marriage and their business.

After you listen to these conversations, see if you came to the same conclusion I did – whether you’ve been married 5 years or 50 years, the Working Genius Assessment is a powerful tool to help you and your spouse improve yourself and your marriage.

If you don’t find a way to receive a 6 Types of Working Genius free assessment as a gift, here’s another option for you.

And I think this may be the easiest technique of all of them.

3. Engage with a Business Coach who is a Working Genius Certified Facilitator

First you need to know or get to know someone who has been certified by The Tablegroup as a Working Genius Facilitator. That’s where you start.

Then simply ask them to tell you more about the Working Genius model.

Before you know it, they may just offer to send you a link to complete the Working Genius assessment at no cost to you.

Why do I think this might happen?

Because since getting certified, I do it a LOT.

I’m not sure how many Working Genius Assessments I’ve given away for free, but it’s not a small number.

And I’m not the only business coach who does this. Here’s an example from Kathy Gilmore, another Working Genius Certified Facilitator. You can her here on LinkedIn or check out her website.

I found myself nodding in agreement as I listened to Kathy in her video post on LinkedIn.

Kathy’s attitude is exactly what I’m talking about!

So why would I do this?

One motivation is similar to what I’m hearing in Kathy’s video.

Once you’ve experienced the benefits of the Six Types of Working Genius framework personally and with your teams, you can’t help but share it with others!

And I have other factors driving my behavior too.

Why I Give Away The 6 Types of Working Genius Free Assessments

There are several reasons I give away Working Genius Assessments.

A simple business reason for offering a free Working Genius Assessment

The first reason is a simple business investment. I provide several levels and packages of executive coaching for business leaders, and I like to have every client complete the assessment before we work together.

The assessment helps me understand my coaching clients better and have deeper insight into who they are and how they like to work.

If you and I are going to be working together in a coaching environment, I can serve you better by studying your Working Genius Assessment results.

Giving you a free Working Genius assessment may lead to you wanting to hire me as your business coach.

If that’s the case, we can begin making progress even earlier.

And, if you don’t choose to let me provide you with coaching, I haven’t lost a lot of money because, as I explained before, the cost of the assessment isn’t high. And it’s even lower for me because I get a discount as a Working Genius Certified Facilitator.

That’s not the main reason I’ve given away so many assessments over the years though.

The more important reason I give so many people a free Working Genius Assessment

As the old saying goes, “Money isn’t everything.”

What really drives me to invest my money in others, whether they’re potential future coaching clients or not, is the results I know they’ll get.

The increased self-awareness that you will get through the Six Types of Working Genius Assessment can change your life.

I say that with confidence because that’s been my experience and the experience I’ve witnessed with dozens of my clients and coworkers.

I’ve seen firsthand, the positive impact this model can have on teams and marriages.

And I’ve also listened to story after story told by the creators of the Working Genius model. They’ve seen tens of thousands of people get their personal Working Genius Assessment results and tell them about the life-changing effects they’ve experienced.

This is the kind of work I want to do.

In fact, one of my main goals in life is to help others thrive and flourish at work and to have more joy, energy, and fulfillment in alll areas of their lives.

I’ve had the privilege of getting to pursue that goal throughout my career when I’m supervising my direct reports and leading cross-functional teams. And, I get to do the same thing when I’m coaching clients.

Outside of work, I’ve been blessed to have countless relationships in my family, church, and community with incredible humans just like I have in my business relationships.

That’s why I’m so grateful the Six Types of Working Genius framework helps people in all parts of their lives.

So I’ve given free Working Genius assessments to family members, former coworkers, friends from church, and even people I am just getting to know because I know their lives will be better when they become more aware of the types of work they’ve been created to do.

My Working Genius Pairing explains why I do what I do

When you consider my own Working Genius Pairing, you can see why doing this brings me joy, energy, and fulfillment.

The Insightful Collaborator is the term for a person like me who has the Working Geniuses of Discernment and Enablement.

So my innate desire and ability to help others, especially through formal or informal coaching makes sense.

I wouldn’t have understood that as well before taking the Working Genius Assessment and I definitely wouldn’t have been able to articulate it as well as I can now.

You can take a look at it my full report showing not only my Working Geniuses but also my Working Competencies and Working Frustrations too here if you’re interested.

Just thinking about you taking the assessment gets me super curious about what you might learn about yourself when you review your own personal Working Genius Assessment report.

If you’re curious like I am, I encourage you to start with where we started this article.

Pick one of the ways to get the 6 Types of Working Genius free assessment and see if that approach saves you a few bucks.

3 Techniques for Getting a Six Types of Working Genius Assessment for Free

Have your company pay for it.

I’ll give you what the Working Genius team says in the assessments and the official training materials and share what I’ve learned working with dozens of clients and co-workers as a Working Genius Certified Facilitator.

Be sure to check out the latest official Working Genius content from the Tablegroup and learn more about how you can use the assessment results to make yourself and your teams more productive at WorkingGenius.com.

The Creative Dreamer – Wonder and Invention (WI | IW)

What the Working Genius team says

“A passionate idealist with an endless stream of big questions and ideas to consider. Comfortable with their head in the clouds.

People with this pairing derive real joy and energy from contemplating the world around them and generating a fountain of new ideas. Generally idealistic and future-oriented, they are passionate about new possibilities that break through unnecessary boundaries. They don’t value practicality, focus or implementation as much as idealism and ingenuity. This sometimes leads to stress or chaos among people around them who might be looking for realism and actionability. We call this pairing The Creative Dreamer.”

What I’ve learned

When a team member is a Creative Dreamer, you need them to ask good questions and generate new ideas. That’s how they add the most value.

But, if you don’t stay aware of the phase of work you’re in during your project, you might get frustrated with them.

If you’re having a meeting during the Implementation stage of a project, and they keep bringing up new ideas to restart the project, your team won’t be productive.

Review this post, 4 Meeting Types – How To Make Each Productive, to help the person with the Wonder and Invention Working Geniuses (and the rest of the team) stay focused!

The Contemplative Counselor – Wonder and Discernment (WD | DW)

What the Working Genius team says

“A thoughtful, insightful, and nuanced advisor. Slow to declare certainty but deep in wisdom, intuition, and rationale.

People with this pairing derive real joy and satisfaction from using their intuition and instincts to evaluate ideas and plans, and to provide others with thoughtful feedback. They tend to be extremely observant and deep in their thinking, and express their insights using impactful words. Because of their proclivity to nuance, they can sometimes be hesitant to declare certainty or express confidence in their own judgments. We call this pairing The Contemplative Counselor.”

What I’ve learned

When I discovered the 6 Types of Working Genius pairing of a “WD” I realized I had been describing people with this combination incorrectly.

I had been calling them “wishy-washy”! (Not out loud of course.)

I was misinterpreting their tendency to be extremely observant and deep in their thinking as well as their hesitancy to declare certainty or express confidence in their own judgments.

When I recognized they needed time to process before responding and some extra encouragement to trust themselves, I saw their unique perspective as an asset to our team not a liability. And, our team became much more productive when I corrected my point of view.

If you have a wishy-washy person on your team and think they may actually be a Contemplative Counselor, check out my post, How To Manage Wishy-Washy People, for tips on how to help them thrive and contribute more to your team, especially in meetings.

The Philosophical Motivator – Wonder and Galvanizing (WG | GW)

What the Working Genius team says

“An excitable, curious, and enthusiastic proponent of ideas and people. A unique combination of eagerness and caution.

People with this pairing derive real joy and energy from contemplating potential in the world around them, passionately exhorting and encouraging others. They are idealistic and enthusiastic. Their combination leads them to sometimes experience and portray a sense of impulsivity or unpredictability, as they go back and forth between passionate action and cautious reflection. We call this pairing The Philosophical Motivator.”

What I’ve learned

If you have a teammate or a family member with the Philosophical Motivator pairing, take time to listen to them and understand what they’re thinking. With the Wonder Working Genius, they will likely observe things other people miss.

They long for their questions to be heard and to hear someone say, “That’s a great question. I never thought of that perspective.” They want others to engage with them and show interest.

The Idealistic Supporter – Wonder and Enablement (WE | EW)

What the Working Genius team says

“A loyal, modest, and thoughtful contributor. Carefully considers others’ needs and reluctant to demand attention.

People with this pairing derive real joy and energy from providing meaningful support to causes that align with their idealistic values and sense of belonging. They are often modest about their abilities, loyal, and selfless, proving to be extremely valuable, low-maintenance team members. Because of their depth and desire to please others, they can sometimes be overly deferential and often hesitate to initiate change, preferring to let others make the first move. We call this pairing The Idealistic Supporter.”

What I’ve learned

My wife, Kiersten, has Enablement and Wonder as her Working Genius pairing. And, the statement above, “Carefully considers others’ needs and reluctant to demand attention.” couldn’t be more accurate.

This is also true for a coworker who also serves as a deacon in his local church. Both of them seek to serve others in their work and in their ministries.

Based on my personal experience with these two people I respect and admire and many other WE | EW Idealistic Supporters, I encourage you to recognize the value they provide to your team and your organization. They are modest and low-maintenance and can sometimes be overlooked so be sure to tell them how much you appreciate what they do.

The Careful Implementer – Wonder and Tenacity (WT | TW)

What the Working Genius team says

“A thorough, practical, and careful contributor. A unique combination of steady reliability and quiet depth.

People with this pairing derive real joy and satisfaction from getting things done in a thorough and reliable way, as long as they understand the rationale and importance of what they are doing. They are a mysterious mix of practicality and inquisitiveness, action, and reflection. As a result of the divergence between Wonder and Tenacity (they are at opposite ends of the process of work), they often find themselves experiencing and projecting angst in the midst of a project, feeling an almost overwhelming need to slow down and ask questions that might alleviate potential problems. We call this pairing The Careful Implementer.”

What I’ve learned

If you’ve got a Careful Implementer on your team, remember the internal conflict they may feel because their Working Geniuses are at the beginning (Wonder) and the end (Tenacity) of the work process.

Seek to understand what they are feeling and create a safe space for them to ask questions.

By slowing down and listening to them, you will likely identify risks to your project so your team can solve them before they do lasting damage.

The Discriminating Ideator – Invention and Discernment (ID | DI)

What the Working Genius team says

“A creative, intuitive, and confident generator of new ideas. Uses instinct and integrative thinking to solve real problems.

People with this pairing get real energy and joy from using their intuition and instinctive ability to come up with new ideas from scratch, and they are good at using integrative thinking and pattern recognition rather than data and expertise. As a result, they are particularly effective in solving problems and coming up with workable, practical solutions with a particularly high level of success. They can sometimes appear impatient and over-confident when they receive pushback around their ideas, and they often lose interest after the initial phase of Invention is over. We call this pairing The Discriminating Ideator.”

What I’ve learned

I studied and applied Patrick Lencioni’s work for years before he developed the Six Types of Working Genius framework. His books The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and The Ideal Team Player are two of my favorites. Through his writing, I’ve learned a lot about how he thinks and does his work.

But seeing his Working Genius Assessment report in The Six Types of Working Genius book and listening to him talk about his Working Genius pairing of Invention and Discernment (ID) on his podcast really gave me insight into why he’s been so successful.

As a Discriminating Ideator he quickly comes up with lots of ideas and intuitively analyzes them to know which ones will work best.

No wonder Pat Lencioni has made such a positive impact on so many people and organizations throughout his career.

The Evangelizing Innovator – Invention and Galvanizing (IG | GI)

What the Working Genius team says

“An excitable and convincing generator and promoter of new ideas. Combines curiosity and confidence with infectious enthusiasm.

People with this pairing derive real joy and energy from generating new ideas and convincing others of an idea’s merit. Exuberant and enthusiastic, they are not easily deterred by initial pushback, and enjoy the challenge of sharing ideas to convince others to act. They can be hasty to start selling ideas before taking time to fully consider the prudence of an idea, and can be initially perceived as slightly over-the-top in their approach. We call this pairing The Evangelizing Innovator.”

What I’ve learned

I’ve worked with more than a few Evangelizing Innovators over the decades of my career and, to be honest, they can frustrate me!

Because they don’t always take the time to Discern an idea and I have the Working Genius of Discernment, I want them to slow down and think when before they start rallying the team to take action immediately.

Since their Working Genius pairing of IG is a match for my two Working Frustrations, it’s no wonder I don’t always see projects as they do.

Since learning the Working Genius approach, however, I now recognize how they are wired allows them to energetically do the parts of projects I don’t enjoy. Together we can both contribute to the success of the work we’re doing and be more productive as a team.

The Adaptable Designer – Invention and Enablement (IE | EI)

What the Working Genius team says

“A generator of new ideas in response to the needs of others. A unique combination of creativity and flexibility. People with this pairing derive real joy and energy from providing new solutions and ideas that serve the unique needs of others. They have the rare ability to balance their passion for ingenuity with the capacity to adjust to the desires of the people they are serving. They are creative, flexible, open to feedback, and easy to work with. In their desire to please others, they are too quick to accommodate and avoid advocating for their own ideas. This can leave them feeling undervalued. We call this pairing The Adaptable Designer.”

What I’ve learned

I recently hired a team member with the EI Working Genius pairing and it was quickly obvious that he was “creative, flexible, open to feedback, and easy to work with.” His actions and his Working Genius Assessment report were well aligned and he immediately began contributing to our team. We were lacking in Invention in our group and we needed and welcomed his new ideas.

The Methodical Architect – Invention and Tenacity (IT | TI)

What the Working Genius team says

“A precise, reliable, and planful solver of problems. A unique combination of innovative thinking and practical implementation.

People with this pairing get real joy and energy from designing practical solutions to problems that are based on ingenuity, rationale, and precision. They work in a steady and reliable way when generating new ideas, and are not easily distracted by possibilities that might prove logistically unfeasible. In their dogged pursuit of a workable solution, they can sometimes miss the nuance of a given situation or overlook human needs. We call this pairing The Methodical Architect.”

What I’ve learned

I need to write an entire post about the Methodical Architect Working Genius pairing based on my coaching experiences. Whether it’s the C-level executive or the small business owner who’s an IT, they tend to do the same thing. They get a great idea, and they want it implemented RIGHT NOW!

While this drive for action is good in many ways, they also need the input from others on their team to evaluate their idea to identify risks and consider alternative (and possibly better) approaches.

My experience with this Working Genius pairing in particular has shown me the tremendous benefit of creating a Working Genius Team map and discussing it with an experienced advisor.

This activity has given my clients increased self-awareness and a deeper appreciation of their team members, even those who are slowing them down!

The Intuitive Activator – Discernment and Galvanizing (DG | GD)

What the Working Genius team says

“An instinctive and confident decision-maker. Able to assess situations quickly and accurately, and marshal people to act.

People with this pairing get real joy and energy from instinctually evaluating ideas and situations, and quickly identifying the right course of action to take. They generally make quick and surprisingly accurate assessments, often without specific knowledge or data, and artfully rally others to agree with them and their bias for action. Because of their skills and confidence, they can sometimes be cavalier in their declarations and may appear impatient or dismissive when made to consider critical details required for implementation. We call this pairing The Intuitive Activator.”

What I’ve learned

Here’s one of the best descriptions I’ve ever heard of a person with the “DG | GD” pairing:

“Rarely wrong but never in doubt.”

This is especially true for one of my closest friends and co-workers, Chet Sears. When that guy discerns the best path to take to make progress on an adaptive challenge or solve a technical problem, he’s going to get the team motivated and moving!

And, if you’re wise, you’ll follow his lead because as the description above says, he’s rarely wrong. I’ve got over 17 years of experience working with this Intuitive Activator to back me up on this.

If you want to hear more from Chet, check out one of the Connect Mobilize Deliver podcast episodes we did together.

How To Lead Boldly

Selfless and compassionate in providing others with what they need in the right way.

People with this pairing derive real joy and energy from providing others with astute and empathic assistance, based on their intuition and instinct. They are quintessential team players, bringing together exceptional, timely and shrewd counsel, in a selfless manner. They sometimes hesitate to push people to heed their advice, and can be deferential to others when they sense resistance. These tendencies can often leave them feeling underappreciated. We call this pairing The Insightful Collaborator.”

What I’ve learned

When I read this Working Genius pairing description, I say what I hear my clients and coworkers say over and over again.

“This is spot on. Totally nailed it for me.” Or some version of that.

Because Enablement and Discernment are my two Working Geniuses. So, I’m an “Insightful Collaborator”.

This line from above explains why I enjoy coaching others so much:

“People with this pairing derive real joy and energy from providing others with astute and empathic assistance, based on their intuition and instinct.”

This is a big part of why I get so much energy and fulfillment working as an Executive Business Consultant and Coach.

I can personally attest to the benefit and value of The Six Types of Working Genius model so I make it an integral part of my work with clients.

The Judicious Accomplisher – Discernment and Tenacity (DT | TD)

What the Working Genius team says

“A reliable, prudent, and focused doer. A unique combination of practical urgency and intuitive judgment.

People with this pairing derive real joy and energy from getting the right things done efficiently and effectively, and using their judgement to avoid wasting time and resources. They get a lot done by identifying the highest priorities and holding themselves to high standards of execution. They are prudent, focused and diligent. They often feel unnecessary angst about the possibility of failing or when working with others who do not share their high standards in driving for closure. We call this pairing The Judicious Accomplisher.”

What I’ve learned

One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had doing Working Genius team maps came when I was working with a couple who had just started their own business.

She had the Working Genius of Invention and Tenacity and he was a Judicious Accomplisher with Tenacity and Discernment.

When we built their two-person team map, she immediately recognized that his Discernment was exactly what frustrated her but it was also exactly what she needed for their business to be successful.

She needed him to analyze her ideas and look for potential pitfalls and problems BEFORE they both leaned into their Tenacity Working Genius and took action.

Together they were a more productive and effective team because of what they learned through the Working Team Map Exercise we did together.

The Enthusiastic Encourager – Galvanizing and Enablement (GE | EG)

What the Working Genius team says

“A warm and positive affirmer of others. Quick to support and inspire people who need energy or reassurance.

People with this pairing derive joy and energy from inspiring and supporting others to grow, improve, and feel good about themselves. They are positive, exuberant and optimistic, gladly demonstrating their excitement about the potential of others. They are consummate cheerleaders, in the truest sense of the word. In their desire to be positive, they can sometimes be too quick to affirm others or provide unwarranted praise, leaving them to be potentially dismissed or perceived as naïve or insincere. We call this pairing The Enthusiastic Encourager.”

What I’ve learned

While this pairing does have the downside factors mentioned above, who doesn’t want an “Enthusiastic Encourager” on their team?

The positive energy a team member with the Working Genius combination of Galvanizing and Enablement provides value beyond what is often measurable.

The Assertive Driver – Galvanizing and Tenacity (GT | TG)

What the Working Genius team says

“A taskmaster extraordinaire. Willing to push and remind others, and dive in themselves, to ensure that things get done.

People with this pairing derive joy and energy from getting things done, as well as rallying others to get things done with them. They don’t mind blowing through obstacles and are even comfortable ignoring social protocols from time to time when it is required to push something through to completion. They are people of high conviction and standards. Understandably, they can sometimes be seen as pushy, and are often impatient with too much planning and brainstorming, preferring to get right to work. We call this pairing The Assertive Driver.”

What I’ve learned

Despite the challenges that come with managing a “taskmaster extraordinaire”, every leader will benefit from having an Assertive Driver on their team.

I speak from personal experience because I’ve had the privilege of watching one of my direct reports with the Working Geniuses of Tenacity and Galvanizing motivate and drive project teams to achieve high levels of success.

If you want a team that gets things done, make sure you include an Assertive Driver!

The Loyal Finisher – Enablement and Tenacity (ET | TE)

What the Working Genius team says

“A responsive, dependable doer. Willing to step up when something is needed and determined to fulfill their commitments.

People with this pairing derive joy and energy from completing tasks and responding to the needs of others in the pursuit of getting things done. They are quick to answer the call to action, equally valuing responsiveness and reliability. They are low-maintenance contributors who hold themselves accountable for delivering on their promises. They have a hard time saying ‘no’ to requests and find themselves over-committed and prone to burn-out and lack of appreciation. We call this pairing The Loyal Finisher.”

What I’ve learned

What a joy it is to see a Loyal Finisher do what they’re created to do. But, be careful to notice them because they often go unseen.

They generally work behind-the-scenes and do all the detailed work that must be done to complete a project – the tasks that others don’t want to do.

I encourage you to take the time to thank the members of your team who have the Working Geniuses of Tenacity and Enablement. They’ll appreciate you noticing their contributions and recognizing the value they bring to the organization.

Learn More About The Working Genius Pairings

If you want to learn more about these 15 Working Genius Pairings or the 6 Types of Working Genius productivity tool in general, here are some steps you can take.

Learn about the Rough Edges of Each Working Genius Pairing

Each of the Working Genius pairings has drawbacks that always go with the positives I outlined above.

Learn about these negative aspects and how to identify them and deal with them productively using the guide in this article, “Rough Edges – How To Deal With Frustrating Coworker Behaviors.” You’ll learn tips and tricks to become more self-aware and understand your team better. You’ll grow as a leader and your team will become even more cohesive and effective.

Listen to the Working Genius Podcast

Episode 25, “ALL the Pairings” of The Working Genius Podcast will help you understand each of the Working Genius combinations much better.

“What is the Working Genius Assessment?” It’s a common question asked by the business leaders I work with.

They typically ask me this right after their eyes light up as I explain how Pat Lencioni’s Six Types of Working Genius productivity tool is predicted (by Lencioni himself) to have an even bigger positive impact than his wildly popular book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.

Once they understand the Working Genius model, they want to know where to start.

And taking the Working Genius assessment is the answer.

But before they begin, they first want to know what the assessment is and how long it will take.

You probably do too.

So in this article I’ll explain what the experts say about the Working Genius assessment.

Then I’ll do what I do with my coworkers and clients to make it even more clear for them – I’ll share my own personal assessment results.

What the experts say about the Working Genius Assessment.

It should come as no surprise that I will defer to the creators of the Working Genius assessment to answer this question.

They built the model after all and train people on how to use it every day!

Here’s what Patrick Lencioni and the Table Group team who created The Six Types of Working Genius framework say:

The Six Types of Working Genius assessment is the fastest and simplest way to discover your natural gifts and thrive at work.
WorkingGenius.com

It’s extremely affordable (not quite free but close!) and only takes about 10 minutes.

When you complete the Working Genius assessment, you’ll immediately receive your personalized report that includes all this and more:

Descriptions of your Working Geniuses, Working Competencies, and Working Frustrations

Application Section

Team Map Analysis Example

That information from the official Working Genius website is straightforward and clear and, of course, I agree with it all.

So how much insight can I possibly add?

And why you should you keep reading what I have to say about the Working Genius Assessment?

Those are valid questions so let me address them.

What more can be said about the assessment?

The Six Types of Working Genius website does a great job of explaining the benefits of the Working Genius framework which includes the assessment.

The Table Group team led by Patrick Lencioni created an excellent set of resources to support The Six Types of Working Genius model and they’re continually adding new content.

But, I learn best from real-life examples and actual experiences shared with me by those who’ve used tools like the Working Genius assessment.

So that’s what I’ll do for you in this article.

Hopefully, what I share will help you answer the question, “What is the Working Genius assessment?” for yourself and in a way that personally benefits you.

Before I share my own insight and help you develop your perspective, I’ll answer the second question I raised earlier:

“Why should you care about what I have to say?”

Why should you care what I have to say?

While it’s true I’m a Working Genius Certified Facilitator (which officially means “I’ve received hands-on training from the Table Group team and been equipped with the tools and resources to help people leverage the Working Genius model with individuals, teams and organizations.”) that’s not why I think you should keep reading.

I’d like you to stick with me in this article because I’m going to share my own Working Genius assessment results.

And I’ll tell you what I’ve learned by studying dozens of assessment and using them to create team maps I use almost every day in my own career and my coaching clients use in their businesses.

My intent with this article is simple:

I want to help you understand the benefits you’ll receive if you decide to take the Working Genius assessment yourself.

So let’s get started with my Working Genius assessment personal report.

My Working Genius Assessment Personalized Report

The Working Genius Assessment includes twelve pages packed

If you’ve heard of the 6 Types of Working Genius framework but aren’t sure how it will benefit you and your team, you’re in the right spot.

In this post, I’ll share how the Working Genius model has helped me personally and tell you what it’s done for my coworkers and clients too.

And I’ll point you to more resources so you can learn even more.

Before I start sharing, let’s start with a question that’s may be on your mind.

What is the 6 Types of Working Genius model?

Great question!

I get asked this all the time.

Many business leaders know it’s Patrick Lencioni’s latest creation.

And they know Lencioni also wrote The Five Dysfunctions of a Team which has had an incredible positive impact on millions of people throughout the world.

But they don’t know much about the 6 Types of Working Genius framework and what it can do for their organization.

If that describes you, here’s a quick summary:

The Working Genius assessment is the fastest and simplest way to discover your natural talents at work.

The 6 Types of Working Genius framework combines personal assessment reports, team maps, and many other resources into an easy-to-understand and simple-to-use tool kit for leaders in a wide variety of businesses and organizations.

The Working Genius model is a productivity tool that feels like a personality assessment because it promotes self-awareness that leads to higher personal and team performance.

The Working Genius resources equip individuals, leaders, and teams to better leverage one another’s strengths while identifying and managing weaknesses that bring frustrating and inefficiency.

This list only touches the surface of the many benefits The 6 Types of Working Genius tool provides individuals and teams.

So if you’re curious about what else the Working Genius model can do for you and the people you work with, keep reading!

I’ve done my best to capture the most important benefits I’ve experienced using the Working Genius resources myself as a business leader and with my clients as a Certified Working Genius Facilitator with hands-on training from the Table Group team who built the model.

Let’s dive in!

The best Working Genius benefit: Self-awareness

I’ve experienced so many of the Working Genius benefits that it’s nearly impossible for me to pick the best one.

But, if I’m forced to, I’m going with self-awareness.

Because whether we’re leading a team or leading ourselves as an individual contributor, we all need more self-awareness.

So how do we get this highly valuable information?

Self-awareness comes with time and maturity for most people which means one answer is to simply wait and observe.

But there’s a better way.

You can invest about 10 minutes to take the 6 Types of Working Genius Assessment because it gives you an “instant understanding of yourself”.

That’s according to Patrick Lencioni and the team who created the model. They discuss this topic in the first two and half minutes of Episode 26 of The Working Genius podcast.

I’ve experienced that personally and with the dozens of people I’ve worked with.

The instant self-discovery that comes within seconds of reading your personal Six Types of Working Genius assessment report is frankly amazing.

My coworkers and clients say things like:

“Spot on. It totally nailed who I am.”

“No wonder I get so frustrated with that part of my work.”
