M4 013: How To Make Your Meetings Like High School

One Meeting Minute Thought for Your Week

When it comes to meetings, businesses should be like high schools.

You and your teams need something every student appreciated back then.

No, I’m not talking about snow days or spring break!

With back-to-back-to-back meetings common in most work environments, you and your teams need passing periods.

But, I recommend you skip the loud bells (and the teenage drama).

You remember passing periods from high school, right?

There was time to move from one room to another between classes.

It was the good old days when you actually had time to go to the bathroom!

And, maybe even have a quick personal conversation with a friend or two.

Wouldn’t it be great to have those benefits in your company environment today?

You can make that happen.

Mandatory, company-wide policies aren’t typically well received but your example will be.

To make all your meetings (and your teammates) more productive and effective do one or both of these 2 things:

✅ Schedule your meetings to start at 5 minutes past the hour (or half hour).

✅ End them 5 or 10 minutes before the typical time.

The people who attend your meetings will feel like they’re in high school again (in some ways at least) and probably even thank you.

More Resources to Help You Build Your Career and Your Business

Microsoft knows what you need to make the most of your meetings. They make it easy to implement a passing period in Outlook.

This will give you the time you need right after a meeting to process the content.

And, at least a few minutes to prep for the next one.

Make this the norm for you and your business.

Change your Outlook Calendar settings.

It’s quick and super easy.

Here’s how to do it.
