M4 010: How To Hear The Quiet Voice You’re Missing

One Meeting Minute Thought for Your Week

They’re always there.

But, they rarely say anything.

What are they thinking?

You know the person.

He or she attends every meeting they’re invited to.

Without fail, they’re there.

And, without fail, their voice is left unheard.

Silent.

What do they know that others don’t?

What insight do they have that leaves the meeting with them?

Their voice likely offers a unique perspective.

Theirs may be the dissenting position in a room filled with agreement.

If they were to speak, the team would get highly valuable wisdom and experience others don’t have.

So, what can you do?

Be a leader in this meeting – even if you’re not the formal “leader”.

Don’t overcomplicate it. Simply ask the quiet person to share their opinion.

Do this privately or during the meeting depending on what demonstrates the most respect for them.

Some people won’t respond well if you “put them on the spot” by asking them a direct question.

But, if you give that same person a warning and let them prepare, they’ll show the group what they’ve been missing.

They’ll provide insight your coworkers and your business need to hear.

That quiet person in your meeting wants to contribute. They just need to be asked.

You can be the leader who helps your coworker shine during your next meeting.

Who will you help speak up and share their perspective during a meeting this week?

Sometimes asking a particular question to the group during a meeting will cause a typically quiet person to surprise everyone with their insightful comments.

This post on my blog contains 32 powerful questions to ask during meetings.

How To Ask Powerful Questions – Getting Started (click here)

Here are a few examples of questions that might prompt an insightful comment from someone your team needs to hear from.

  • What is it we’re not seeing?
  • What do we need more clarity about?
  • What’s missing from this picture so far?
  • What would someone who had a very different set of beliefs than we do say about our decision?
  • If there was one thing that hasn’t yet been said in order to reach a deeper level of clarity, what would that be?
